Fall asleep faster with the sleep hormone melatonin.
Sufficient sleep is important for physical and mental health and well-being. We spend around a third of our lives asleep, and sleep consists of several sleep cycles. Important processes take place in the body during sleep. Rest and relaxation phases alternate with deep sleep phases. In deep sleep, we reach the deepest state of sleep. This is when physical recovery is in full swing and we process what we have experienced and store what we have learned. Sleep is therefore an important part of a person’s daily routine; it serves to recover and regenerate bodily functions.
How much sleep a person needs varies. In general, however, most people need at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Melatonin helps to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep.
What is melatonin actually?
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced by the pineal gland in the diencephalon. The natural production of melatonin begins after the onset of darkness and peaks around 2 to 4 am. Melatonin is only found in small quantities in plant-based foods.
