Understanding Sulfate-Free Shampoos

Sulfates such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are cleansing agents that remove oil and dirt and create lather. Sulfate-free shampoos use other cleansing ingredients instead. They may lather less, but lather alone does not determine how well a shampoo cleans.

Sulfate-Free vs. Sulfonate-Free

“Sulfate-free” does not necessarily mean “sulfonate-free.” A shampoo may avoid SLS and SLES but still contain a sulfonate-based cleanser such as Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate. If you want to avoid both, check the full ingredient list (INCI).

Choosing and Using a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

A sulfate-free shampoo may suit dry, damaged, curly, or color-treated hair, or a sensitive or dry scalp, but the best choice depends on the complete formula and your individual needs. Check the ingredient list for other preferences, such as silicone-free or paraben-free. Apply to wet hair, massage into the scalp, rinse thoroughly, and see how your hair and scalp respond.
